Brenton Hutson, is the Division Director of Volunteers of America-Denver. He is passionate regarding the changes Denver needs to make regarding our veteran homeless population.
“I believe that NO veteran should be homeless! We have lowered the number of homeless veterans in Denver but homelessness still exists in Denver because of lack of affordable housing and not enough employers willing to hire HOMELESS veterans. New Orleans, Houston, Salt Lake City and Phoenix have ended veteran homelessness by achieving what is called “functional zero” which means that if there are veterans living on the streets in any of those towns they have been in contact with a homeless service agency and they can move into housing in a relative short period of time when they are ready. Denver, we have no excuse! Message me if you want to be a part of the solution. I am especially interested in communicating with landlords, property managers and employers.”www.voa.org/veterans
Please take a look at this short video (2:17) our local 9News aired on September 15, 2015. It highlights positive changes in our community regarding our homeless veteran population, including the recently opened Bill Daniels Veteran Services Center.
And as a reminder, I would like to mention the Community Job Fair which is hosted by Volunteers of America. It will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at 1247 Santa Fe Drive, Denver, CO in the Bill Daniels Veteran Services Center. 9 am – 12:00 pm with the first half hour slated for veterans ONLY.
